Dear Members,
Retro pay and wage increases:
There have been a lot of concerns raised from those who are on the SAP payroll system and their retro payments. We understand that there are a number of errors particularly with the long service payments.
Many members have looked for the pay rate listed as long service on their statement, much like they would see “evening premium”. The long service rates are not separated with their own line. They are simply listed as “regular” because that is the regular rate.
If you have questions regarding your pay increases and retro, please talk to your manager and time keeper first. They may be able to provide answers. If you do not receive a satisfactory answer, please contact your site VP or your USO.
Deductions:
Many have asked about deductions to their retro pay that are beyond the regular income tax, CPP and EI deductions. You’ll note that there are union dues as well as pension that have been deducted. All deductions that employees pay that are based on the regular income will be deducted from the retro. Retro pay is considered to be regular income. It is that, regular income that should have been paid at any time between April 1st and now. It is considered as “delayed” regular income and for that reason all normal deductions based on general income will be deducted.
Yes, this does include union dues. All unions charge union dues on retro as that is delayed income of which the dues would have been charged had it been paid when it was supposed to have been. CUPE Local 204 following the CUPE National Constitution receives dues on all regular pay which includes retro pay. Please note that regular pay does not include overtime and premiums.
After the ratification of the last collective agreement, ratified September 23, 2022 the Executive Committee approved the refund of all dues paid to Local 204 by our Members. There were several reasons for refunding this even though it breached the CUPE National Constitution, part of which was to recognize how long it had been since the last pay increases. As that was a one time event, we will not be refunding dues this time around.
